Renewal of Concencration to Jesus Through Mary – Aug 2024
The renewal of consecration to Jesus through Mary according to St. Louis de Montfort is a spiritual practice rooted in his classic work True Devotion to Mary. Montfort emphasized that this total consecration should be renewed annually, and even more frequently (monthly, weekly, or daily) through simple prayers and practices.
1. Annual Renewal: Formal Method
St. Louis de Montfort recommended repeating the 33-day preparation followed by the consecration prayer. Here’s how you can do it:
A. Preparation (33 Days)
Members re-do the same 33-day structure:
- Days 1–12: Emptying yourself of the spirit of the world
- Week 1: Knowledge of Self
- Week 2: Knowledge of Mary
- Week 3: Knowledge of Jesus Christ
These meditations are available in Montfort’s writings or in guides like Preparation for Total Consecration by Montfort Publications.
B. Consecration Day
Members renew their consecration on a Marian feast day—ideally the same feast day as your original consecration (e.g., the Annunciation, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Sorrows or Assumption ). The act of consecration prayer is typically said after Mass, with confession and Communion if possible.
Consecration Prayer (excerpt):
“I, [your name], a faithless sinner, renew and ratify today in thy hands, O Immaculate Mother, the vows of my Baptism…”
(Full version is found in True Devotion to Mary, §233.)
2. Daily or Frequent Renewal
It is not compulsory to do the full 33-day preparation each time. Montfort encouraged daily renewals using short prayers:
Examples:
- Short Formula:
“I am all yours, and all that I have belongs to you, O most loving Jesus, through Mary, your holy Mother.”
- Latin Version (often used):
“Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt, o Virgo super omnia benedicta.”
(“I am all yours, and all that I have is yours, O most blessed Virgin.”)
Members also wear a chain (as a symbol of holy slavery), pray the Rosary daily, and live out the spirit of the consecration.
